• Rest day in Mazatlan, Mexico

After 16 days on the road averaging 352kms per day, it is time for a day off for some rest, bike maintenance and route planning. The selected location is on the beach north of the lively city of Mazatlan, east coast of Mexico.

The previous day comprised 12 hours on the bikes with about 1.5hrs break for a mexican breakfast mid morning (eggs and refried beans…..except the beans we rerererererefried) and several other minor stops. One particular brief stop high up in the mountains I felt a banging on the back tyre of my bike. A small local boy had appeared and was whacking the back tyre with a stick whilst repeating “Amigo, usted tiene un clavo en el neumatico”. An inspection of the rear tyre revealed a large roofing nail was firmly wedged between the tread. The old adage of “if it aint broke, don’t fix it” sprang to mind, so after rewarding the little bloke with a handful of peanut M&M’s (kept on board for such occassions), we pushed on the remaining 250kms. Given I am running tubed tyres, I was very surprised that the tyre held out until we reached town.

Old mate at the tyre repair shop, whilst not the talkative type, did an efficient job on both of our rear tyres after Loz also discovered a nail hanging out of his rear one in the morning. A patch job on Lozza’s tubeless tyre did the trick, whereas whilst the Mexican Michellin Man extracted a 2 inch long nail from mine, the weird angle off it ensured that it didn’t penetrate right through. Happy days!!

The coast line is beautiful here and the 26degree cloudless days add to the tropical feel. Hard to believe that yesterday we were battling sub zero temperatures in the mountains.

Nice nail, I’m surprised you haven’t picked up a fish hook or two along the coast.

Moody shot Muz! Down the barrel. All we need is a husky voice and a catch phrase…..
The mental imagine of the little boy and the tyre is killing me…..for some reason he seems to sound like the cartoon Speedy Gonzalez.
    Keep ‘er lit lads!
